Transforming Spelling at Grange Community School with Ready Steady Spell

At Grange Community Nursery and Primary School, embedding Ready Steady Spell has transformed the teaching and learning of spelling. This innovative, research-driven resource is designed to help children in Years 2–6 master spelling with confidence. By combining seven effective strategies, ready-made lesson plans, and targeted interventions, Ready Steady Spell significantly reduces teacher workload while boosting spelling outcomes for all learners.

Last academic year, Gareth and Olivia from Literacy Counts visited Grange Community Nursery and Primary School, spending a day engaging with both teachers and students. It was evident that the school maintained high expectations for its pupils, fostering a culture of excellence and commitment to learning. This visit reinforced the seamless integration of Ready Steady Spell into the school's daily practices, contributing to impressive results.

In this blog, you’ll hear from the school’s Leadership Team about the positive changes they've witnessed since introducing Ready Steady Spell. Additionally, we’ll share Pupil Voice testimonials, highlighting how fun and engaging the lessons have been in helping children improve their spelling skills.

Leadership Voice

The feedback from both students and leadership highlights the significant impact Ready Steady Spell and Literacy Counts have had on the school’s literacy outcomes. Ready Steady Spell supports school leadership by providing detailed guidance, CPD modules, and assessment tools that ensure consistent implementation across the school. Leadership teams can easily monitor progress, identify gaps, and support staff with ready-made resources, helping to raise spelling outcomes while maintaining high teaching standards.

As a head teacher, Literacy Counts has done so much for Grange. Without it, we wouldn’t be in the position we are today because we now have whole-school consistency in teaching phonics, spelling, reading, and writing. We now have knowledgeable and confident staff, and now have brilliant outcomes across the school.
— S. Albiston, Headteacher
Ready Steady Spell ensures that all learning is consolidated and revisited, which is great. There are various strategies for the children to use, catering to individual needs. The children are engaged and enjoy it.

Pupil Voice

Gareth spoke with the children, who expressed their appreciation for Ready Steady Spell and its effectiveness in enhancing lessons and providing challenging activities that boost their confidence. Children love Ready Steady Spell because it makes learning fun through interactive, multisensory strategies like Rule Rhymes, songs, and engaging activities. The resource turns spelling into a lively and enjoyable experience, allowing children to explore creative ways to remember spellings while building confidence and improving outcomes.

Ready Steady Spell is amazing because I like the different strategies. The songs are funny but I really like the ‘Wrong Say, Right Spell’ because you get to say silly things to help spell the words.
— Year 2 Child
Ready Steady Spell is amazing because it challenges you and helps you with your lessons. I really like the end of the lesson when we do the sentences. It’s challenging, but when we get it right, you feel proud of yourself.
— Year 5 Child
I like doing the ‘Syll-a-beat’ strategy. You clap for each syllable and it helps me break it down into chunks that are more easy to spell.
— Year 2 Child
I like the rhymes because they’re nice and funky which makes it easier to remember. I sing them at home and in the car with my mum. She knows them now too!
